Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday posted a comment to remind Nigerians that despite criticism and abuses hauled on him during his administration, it’s still better than the present leadership.

In the post shared in 2014 by the Mr. Jonathan, it reads:

“I am the most abused and insulted President in the world but when I leave office, you will all remember me for the total ‘freedom’ you enjoyed under me.”

This came shortly after APC administration’s plans to treat hate speech as terrorism.

Recall that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had last week said that thenceforth, the Federal Government would treat hate speech as terrorism, while the military said it would be monitoring comments on social media to tackle anti-government and anti-security views.

Jonathan’s re-post had elicited more than 10,421 shares and 2,780 comments from his over two million followers. But while some hailed the former President, others lambasted him for allegedly allowing corruption to thrive during his administration.

One of the Facebook user Chukwuma Okey said,

“Forever my God will bless your generation. You treated us like your Children, you never thought of punishing anyone. You disappointed the American by accepting defeat thereby averting war in this country as prophecised by the Americans. You put measure in place for fighting corruption(BVN and TSA), today they are taking the glory, but we that are not gullible know that you are the one fighting corruption. During your regime, a bag of rice was 8000 naira, a loaf of bread was 150, a bag of Garri was 1,500 etc, today every price commodity has been increased by 100%. Till tomorrow, both your predecessors and successors, you are the best President Nigerians have ever produced.

Another user Abubakar Ibrahim Hanwa has praises for Jonathan quote:

“We have thrown away our democracy and replaced it with a brutal dictatorship that fights our judicial and legislative systems. President Goodluck Jonathan has written his name in diamond of history as the epitome of peace, focus, and development of NIGERIA! GOD BLESS Goodluck Jonathan.

Among those who criticised him, Khalid Adam wrote, “You should bury your face in shame. You allowed Boko Haram to kill people anyhow and Nigerian money to be looted with your comment of ‘stealing is not corruption.’ You are the worst president Nigeria ever produced.”

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode who was also the spokesman for the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in 2015, said the ruling All Progressives Congress got to power through hate speech and rigging.

According to Kayode, it was hypocritical of the APC government to complain about hate speeches. He described Jonathan’s statement as a prophetic statement of fact and those who wish to silence the opposition and dissenting voices by claiming that all they are saying is hate speech shall fail.

“They came to power through hate speech and they will leave through hate speech. Jonathan and those who stood by him in 2015 have been vindicated because today, we have a government and a ruling party that cannot take as good as it gives,” he said.
